The essential work of the subproject C4 is the further development of stochastic tools for reliability assessment of a ceramic component within the process of product development. For the reliability assessment the program STAU will be used to calculate the failure probability of a ceramic component based on the results of an appropriate FE-analysis. The subproject is placed between characterization of material on one side and the modelling of complex load cases of components on the other.

In the current period of promotion a generalized description of static and cyclic crack growth mechanisms for the aim of improved assessment of failure in the case of mixed mode loading occurs. The modelling of strengthening mechanisms such as the R-curve-effect and the cyclic crack growth behaviour in ceramics will be implemented. The models of strengthening mechanisms can be deduced from crack propagation experiments and will be transferred to natural cracks.
