Compared to metallic materials and polymers engineering ceramics are characterised by their unique combination of high stiffness and hardness with high thermal and chemical resistance. The utilisation of these advantageous properties of ceramic materials should lead to an improved performance of technical systems under high tribological and/or mechanical loads. The achieved advantages may justify the higher cost of technical ceramics even under economical aspects. Based on the potentially useful properties of ceramic materials ecological, economical and technical advantages can be expected, e.g. the reduction of environmental pollution by toxic media, longer service life or higher performance combined with reduced system size.
