Ontology based Engineering design and system development

The newly applied project A8 addresses the development of a tool that supports the design engineer at the retrieval of problem specific information within the methodical design process of sliding and friction systems with advanced ceramics. Ontologies represent a common concept and comprehension model. They offer the possibility to connect information with its context and in this way can form the basis for knowledge representation and information retrieval. The scientific challenge lies hereby within the development of the ontology and the creation of the advanced ceramics information system ( K-KIS). Those contents are carried out in close cooperation with the other projects and project groups of the CER. The ontology development is based on structured interviews and the discussion of the interview results with all the projects. The ontology, developed in this way, is used for the further scientific work within the project in order to create an explicit knowledge structure within the CER regarding engineering design, tribology, testing and material selection for sliding and friction systems with advanced ceramics. Thus the ontology will be used for the information retrieval user interface of the advanced ceramics information system ( K-KIS).
